Surveys keep finding the same thing: most people have paid for at least one "free trial" they forgot to cancel. The fitness industry runs on that forgetfulness, which is a strange foundation for products that are supposed to be good for you. So here is a list we wish existed when we were on the other side of it: apps you can genuinely try, or use forever, without putting a card on file first. Including apps that compete with ours.
Completely free, no account gymnastics
Nike Training Club
Free since 2020 and still free. A large library of trainer-led workouts and multi-week programs, no payment details anywhere. The trade-off: it is a library, not a plan. Nothing is personalized, there is no nutrition guidance, and no one notices whether you show up. As a free starting point, it is excellent and we recommend it without hesitation.
YouTube (seriously)
Creators like MadFit, Sydney Cummings, and growwithjo publish full-length free workouts, and for many women that is genuinely enough. The same trade-off applies: you are the programmer, the nutritionist, and the accountability system, which is exactly the part most of us struggle with.
Free tier, paid upgrades
Caliber
A science-forward strength app with a real free tier: you can train on it indefinitely without paying or entering a card. Paid tiers add groups and human coaching (the top tier is genuinely expensive). Best for people who like tracking and want strength fundamentals; it assumes more gym comfort than a true beginner usually has.
Real trials with no card required
Ladder
A team-based strength app with coach-programmed weekly workouts, around $29.99/month after a 7-day trial that does not require payment details up front. Deservedly popular and growing fast. Know two things: it is iPhone-only at the time of writing, and Ladder itself positions its plans for people who already train rather than complete beginners. No nutrition planning.
SCULPTiv (us)
Our membership is $19/month, one plan, price visible before you ever take the quiz. The trial is 14 days with no credit card: if you do not join at the end, your plan simply pauses. Nothing to cancel, nothing to forget, no surprise charge, ever. What makes it different from everything above is that it is built around you specifically: a free 3-minute quiz calculates your calories, protein, and macros from your body and matches you to one of five at-home dumbbell programs, with the research behind every number shown to you. It is made for women starting or restarting, with sessions from 15 minutes and a plan that forgives a missed week instead of punishing it.
How to protect yourself with any trial
- If an app takes your card for a "free" trial, set a phone reminder for two days before it ends, the moment you sign up.
- Check the cancellation path before you subscribe, not after. If you cannot find it in two minutes, believe what that tells you.
- Prefer apps that show their price before the quiz or signup. Hidden and variable pricing is the biggest red flag in this category.
- Screenshots of your signup and cancellation are worth keeping. Support teams respond faster to evidence.
Try the one built around you.
The free quiz builds your personalized strength and nutrition plan in 3 minutes. You see the whole plan before you decide anything, and the 14-day trial needs no credit card.
